Health Insurance in the Netherlands: How to Get the Best Deal

Whether you’re a newcomer or a long-time resident, understanding the Dutch health insurance system is essential. In the Netherlands, health insurance is mandatory for everyone over 18 who lives or works here. But what are options and how can you find the best deal?

Step 1: Know What You Need

The Dutch system is built around two types of insurance:

  • Basic insurance (basisverzekering): Covers essential care like GP (General Practitioner) visits, hospital stays, and prescription medication. Every insurer offers this, and coverage is regulated by the government.
  • Supplementary insurance (aanvullende verzekering): Optional add-ons for dental care, physiotherapy, glasses, and more.

Note: Everyone pays for basic insurance, but the price and service vary by provider.

Step 2: What You Need to Apply

To get insured, you’ll need:

  • A BSN (Burger Service Nummer) – your citizen service number
  • Proof of residence in the Netherlands
  • A valid ID or passport
  • Sometimes: employment contract or residence permit (especially for expats)

You must apply within 4 months of registering at your municipality. If you don’t, you risk fines and automatic enrollment. If you are late, you usually will have to pay the amount retroactively. For example, if you are one month late, they will charge you one month extra.

Step 3: Compare, Compare, Compare

There are over 30 insurers in the Netherlands, and while basic coverage is the same, prices and perks differ. Use comparison tools like:

  • Geld.nl: Independent tool with discounts and tailored recommendations
  • Independer.nl: Easy-to-use platform with expert support

 Things to compare:

  • Monthly premium
  • Deductible (eigen risico): Standard is €385, but you can raise it to lower your premium. You can raise if you have enough savings and you can pay your medical expenses
  • Free choice of hospitals and specialists
  • Customer service ratings

Step 4: Check If You Qualify for Zorgtoeslag

If your income is low, you may be eligible for zorgtoeslag (healthcare allowance). In 2025, the maximum is:

  • €131/month for individuals
  • €250/month for couples

Apply via Mijn Toeslagen, the Dutch tax authority’s portal.

Step 5: Complete Your Policy

Once you’ve chosen a provider:

  • Apply online (most insurers offer English support)
  • Set up monthly payments
  • Get your policy and insurance card

You’re now covered!

Bonus Tips:

  • You can pay the whole sum for the year of the insurance in one go. By doing so, you can save from 1-3% on the costs compared to monthly payments.
  • Switching insurers? You can do so every year between November 12 and December 31.
  • Intern? You may need special coverage depending on your income and visa status.
  • Check if your employer offers discount for a specific insurer.
  • Check for health insurance perks! For example some insurers have free chat with a nurse or give free sunscreens.
