Dutch health insurance: how to find the best one? While it is relatively easy to compare health insurance prices and find the cheapest one, there are some tips. These tips took me years to learn. I write them down for you.

1. Does you company offer a discount for a collective health care insurance?
Check with you company! Also check if you need an extra action to get the discount or is automatically offered. Don’t forget to also check with your company if they offer discount on supplementary or dental insurance.
2. Is there a discount if you pay in one go?
With an average payment of €150 per month (€1800 a year), 1% discount is €18 euros. It is a menial amount. But if you improve also in other domains like supermarket discounts and mortgage interest, it can be a quiet win. This is especially true if you compound these savings over several years.
3. What hospitals can you choose?
In websites like Independer you can check what hospitals are covered in you region. Handy if you plan to get pregnant or if you have a conditions that requires specific expertise.
4. What reimbursement does it have for providers without a contract?
If you visit a healthcare provider with whom the insurer does not have a partnership, is usually only partially reimbursed. Check how much the insurer reimburses in this case.
5. Do affordable plans offer supplementary insurance?
Double check. Some affordable plans limit supplementary options or have increased costs or lowered coverage. In other cases there are really good supplementary insurances but requires a health check.
6. Does it include nice-to-have perks?
Think of discounts in sports, skin checks, app the nurse and discounts in products.
7. Child care coverage
If you have children under 18 most the basic insurance is for free. Be extra careful on the supplementary insurance. Some insurers charge the premiums for children under 18. Other insurers include the children in their supplementary packages.
Stay savvy.
