Save Money in the Netherlands: 7 Costly Expat Mistakes to Avoid

If I count the financial mistakes I did the first years I arrived in the Netherlands it will amount in a couple thousands of euros. I am writing down the most common mistakes expats do. You can avoid doing the same and save some money at the same time.

1. Health insurance

Not comparing and possibly changing health insurance can cost you some hundreds euros each year. It’s also worth checking whether your employer offers collective discounts, many do, and it can make a real difference. And don’t forget to be strategic about your eigen risico (deductible): choosing wisely here can save you even more in the long run.

2. Salary negotiation

Specially if it is your first or second job there is a possibility that you think you cannot negotiate your salary. That can cost you thousands of euros in the long run. The good news? Negotiation is a skill you can learn. Read my guide on how to successfully negotiate your salary in the Netherlands and start building the financial future you deserve.

3. Energy provider

In the Netherlands, it’s very common to switch energy providers each year and for a good reason. Comparing and changing providers is quick and straightforward, and doing so can easily save you a few hundred euros annually. A small effort, with big rewards for your wallet.

4. Missing out on allowances (toeslagen)

I never applied for an allowance. Because nobody told me and because I did not look into it. Also, because I thought I will not be eligible for any allowance. Don’t do the same! The most common government allowances are:

  • rent allowance (huurtoeslag)
  • healthcare allowance (zorgtoeslag)
  • childcare allowance (kinderopvangtoeslag)

Check now your eligibility. If you feel intimidated you can ask a tax advisor.

5. 30% ruling

The 30% ruling is a valuable tax break for highly skilled migrants in the Netherlands, one that can save you thousands of euros. Yet many expats miss out simply because they don’t apply in time or aren’t aware of the deadlines. Don’t let this benefit slip away. Read my guide on the 30% ruling and learn how to make the most of it.

6. Not knowing which assets are tax-free

Most people know about the current tax‑free threshold for savings and investments. But here’s the secret: with the right choices, you can actually raise that limit a little. It’s a small adjustment that can make a big difference over time. Knowledge isn’t just power, it’s money saved.

7. Underestimating the cost of renovations

The housing crisis in the Netherlands its really big. So some of us think to avoid the overbidding and buy a fixer upper. Either to renovate themselves or to hire a contractor. A rule of thumb for 2026 is that the a DIY renovation int the Netherlands will cost you about €1.500-2.000 per meter square while hiring a contractor can easily double that. Go in prepared and budget wisely.

Until next time, stay savvy.
